Giving back

As we enter 2024, the world around us continues to evolve, often in ways that challenge our comfort, safety, and understanding. In these moments, it’s natural to focus inward and attempt to safeguard our own well-being as well as that of our family and friends.

However, this year I encourage us all to do something else. Let’s gently turn our focus outward, as well. Let’s consider how we can contribute to the larger well-being of our world. We can begin with our communities. What is important to each of us? Giving back isn’t just about altruism. It is also a pathway toward personal growth and an excellent means to foster connections. Giving back can be a method for planting seeds of change and hope locally, while simultaneously tending to a shared human experience.

Consider the communities around us, not just our immediate neighbors. We can expand our sights to include local businesses, schools, religious and cultural institutions, and public spaces. These places help to define how we live. Each one of these entities plays a role in our daily lives. Perhaps you have felt more or less of a connection to one community during this past year and now would be a good time to explore what and where you would like to contribute. It is up to us to find opportunities where we can make a meaningful difference. This could take the form of volunteering at a local shelter, food pantry or park, offering our skills and time to a local non-profit. Our actions have the power to send ripples of kindness and engagement, sometimes in ways that we may not immediately see. Yet, our involvement can foster a sense of belonging and resilience within our communities.

Making a difference in our communities does not necessarily restrict the benefits locally. Our world is interconnected, and even small, thoughtful actions can have global impact. Just as hateful words and actions have a negative impact, kind and supportive engagement has a positive impact. Volunteering with or supporting local, national, or international organizations whose missions we support whether through donations, advocacy, or spreading awareness, are meaningful ways to feel connected to something larger than ourselves and to make an impact.

In 2024, let’s challenge ourselves to focus on our own neighborhoods and communities as well as looking beyond our borders, to understand and empathize with struggles and triumphs that may seem distant but are more connected to the global well-being than we may realize. It is essential to understand and become informed of a group’s history and mission statement before committing to their cause. When we do this, we all can benefit.

As we face the uncertainties and opportunities of 2024, think about embracing the concept of giving back not as an obligation, but as a choice to open ourselves up to hope and be engaged in repairing the world. When we do this, we can truly make a difference. Beginning with our communities, we have the power to leave a positive imprint on our world. Every act of kindness and thoughtfulness, regardless of size, is a step in the effort to repair our world. If not now, when?

TIPS: The Healing Power of Forgiveness: How Letting Go Can Improve Well-Being

Forgiveness is often a challenging path. What we sometimes do not appreciate is that forgiveness can be transformational. Forgiving someone can be an act of emotional generosity, but it can transform the person who forgives, as it can be an important step in self-care and health.

Harboring resentment or anger can have tangible adverse effects on our health such as increasing stress and affecting the health of our hearts and our immune systems. Deciding to forgive means to release these negative emotions and thereby open the door to better physical and mental states. It is important to remember that forgiveness doesn’t excuse hurtful behavior, but it does liberate us from its emotional grip. That is worth our attention and effort.

To forgive we do not need to forget. In fact, reflecting on our experiences is key to our healing journey. It’s about understanding our past pains and learning from them, which is essential for self-forgiveness. This introspection isn’t about blame; it’s about growth and helping us recognize and avoid unhealthy patterns in the future.

Ultimately, forgiveness is an act of self-compassion. By forgiving, we aren’t just showing compassion to others; we are being compassionate to ourselves. It can clear the emotional clutter and allow us to move forward with a lighter heart and clearer, more objective mind. The process of forgiving, learning, and healing equips us with the wisdom to better take care of ourselves, making us more aware of our needs and boundaries.

Forgiveness is a powerful tool for personal liberation and wellness. It’s a gift we give ourselves, and one that leads to greater peace.

DAILY HABIT: Mindful Meditation Practice

Embracing a daily meditation practice can be a transformational habit, one that doesn’t demand too much time or complex skills. It is more about dedicating a few moments each day to mindfulness and inner peace. It might be helpful to begin with a meditation app on a mobile device, which can serve as a gentle guide into practice that provides structure for our journey. The key is consistency, not perfection. It’s important to approach meditation with self-compassion, without judgment. When the mind wanders, we can simply and gently guide our focus back to our breath. This act of returning to our breath is the true essence of our practice.

Meditation is more than a seated practice; it’s a way of life. The tranquility and focus we cultivate on a cushion (or lying down, or even mindfully walking) are meant to flow into our daily activities, enhancing our presence and attentiveness in every moment. As we integrate this habit into our lives, we allow compassion for ourselves to be at the forefront. Understanding — and accepting — that some days will be easier than others is part of the journey. With each session, we are not just practicing meditation, but also nurturing a more mindful, attentive, and compassionate self, ready to engage with the world around us from a renewed sense of clarity and calm.
